According to figures from the IMF, Russia’s GDP sits at $1.68tn, making it the 11th richest country in the world. Factor in a huge and increasingly tech-savvy population (85% of 144.5m Russians have internet access) and a growing middle class with cash to spare and you begin to get an idea of just how much potential Russia has as an e-commerce destination.
Given those figures, it might come as a surprise to learn that Russia is not already a dominant global force in terms of e-commerce. The truth is, Russian consumers have been fairly slow to adopt online shopping due to a preference for cash payments and a general lack of trust for ‘non-traditional’ purchases.
That’s all changing, though. E-commerce spending has risen 20% YOY since 2015 as the population quickly gets used to the idea of buying online. And – as it has across the globe – the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated this growth.
So, while Russia is not topping the charts for online spending at this moment in time, all signs point to it becoming a key global market in the very near future. Perceptive online retailers will already be laying the groundwork to capitalise on the incoming Russian e-commerce revolution.
